Meet our Founders
In 1953, the Union Biblical Seminary was officially approved as a project of Evangelical Fellowship of India (EFI) and inaugurated at Yavatmal. It was constituted by 11 mission and church groups through the initiation of Frank J. Kline of the Free Methodist Church. This was in response to the need expressed by several church groups to send candidates for ministerial training. At present, there are more than 30 churches, Christian institutions, and missions, represented in the UBS Association. To integrate both ministry experience and classroom learning, UBS was relocated to the city of Pune in 1983. UBS represents evangelical Christians from almost all the major Indian ethnic, linguistic and cultural groups, as well as from other countries. Its faculty, staff and students come from various cultural, regional, language backgrounds and church traditions. The dynamic principle of unity in diversity‘ finds its expression in everyday experience based on the solid foundation of the person of Jesus Christ, to whom every member of the UBS is committed. The variegated character of the community provides rich opportunities for cultural interchange and interdenominational understanding.
The Evangelical Fellowship of India (EFI) has played a key role in the establishment and growth of UBS to provide fellowship among evangelical Christians and be a means of unified action directed towards spiritual revival in the Church, active evangelism, and effective witness to, and safeguard of, the evangelical faith in the Church and in all its agencies. At the EFI executive meeting in Raipur in 1953, UBS was approved as an EFI project.
